Microsoft created a device that lets you 'teleport' anywhere in the world

29 March 2016

Holoportation is a new type technology that lets you teleport a 3D image of yourself to anywhere in the world so you can talk and interact with whoever is on the other side.

Here's how it works: Microsoft stationed several 3D cameras around a room that can capture a person from different angles. Those cameras work in conjunction with Microsoft's futuristic holographic goggles, the HoloLens, to composite them in real-time.

Once that reconstruction exists, it can be transported to anywhere in the world, where the other person can see it by wearing the HoloLens.

Pretty cool, eh? The HoloLens will ship to select developers on March 30. In addition to aiding in holoportation, it can insert you into video games and let you virtually tour cities.
