fastjet Zim introduces two weekly flights from Victoria Falls to Johannesburg

8 March 2016

The airline will fly on Fridays and Sundays on the route beginning on March 25.

The cost of the one-way ticket starts from $130 inclusive of the $50 departure tax.

“Flights on our new route between Victoria Falls and Johannesburg will be departing twice-weekly, every Friday and Sunday from Friday 25th March,” the airline said.

Last month, fastjet said it was waiting for approval to fly on the Victoria Falls-Johannesburg route.

The introduction of the Victoria Falls to Johannesburg route came after the low cost airline introduced daily flights between Harare and Johannesburg beginning on February 2 as part of it pan- African expansion. It introduced an evening flight between Harare and Johannesburg beginning on February 26.

The low cost airline also seeks to expand its reach in Southern and East Africa markets, within the first quarter of 2016 once approval is granted.

The Victoria Falls-Johannesburg route is serviced by airlines such as South African Airways and British Airways among others. It will attract more airlines following the completion of the $150 million upgrade at Victoria Falls Airport, a move which would attract bigger airlines such as the Boeing 747s and 777s and Airbus A380 planes.

The upgrade of the airport would see it handling 1,5 million passengers per annum from 500 000.
Zimbabwe is on an ambitious drive to lure more airlines to fly into the country to improve the nation’s accessibility — one of the key pillars of destination marketing.

Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe general manager, David Chawota in 2014 said Zimbabwe wanted to increase airlines that fly into the country to 40 by 2018 from 14.

At the country’s aviation peak between 1999 and 2003, 34 airlines were flying into Zimbabwe. The number dwindled as the economic crisis deepened.
