Liquid Sea, a subsidiary of Liquid Telecom, has started a project to build a new subsea cable linking South Africa to the Middle East, with further connectivity to Europe.
Liquid Telecom CEO Nic Rudnick said international companies involved in the construction of submarine cables have been asked to tender for the project.
The cable will run approximately 10,000km from South Africa to the Middle East, and will connect to Liquid Telecom’s pan-African terrestrial network.
The project has already been funded, and will take 2 years to complete.
Liquid Sea will offer speeds of 20Tbps to 30Tbps – up to 10 times the capacity of existing submarine cables in the region.
The new submarine cable is expected to connect all coastal countries along the east coast of Africa, and provide new connectivity to the Middle East and Europe.
It will also leverage Liquid Telecom’s terrestrial fibre network to provide connectivity to landlocked countries on the continent.
