DStv Eutelsat Star Winner James Mahiya Off To The Caribean

Last year’s DStv-Eutelsat Star Awards winner Joseph Mahiya of Zimbabwe travels to Europe and the Caribbean this weekend to see the launch of a satellite into space.The trip will end on December 5.

Joseph won the essay section within the 2014 DStv-Eutelsat Awards competition, beating competitors from all over Africa to take first place and a chance to travel, first to France for a short stopover and then on to French Guyana to see the launch of a satellite into space.

 

The launch is part of the ongoing Arianespace programme, and will provide Joseph with the chance not only to witness the launch event but also to learn more about the programme and the technology behind it.

The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards, is the unique pan-African competition that sparks interest in science and space technology in young African students

The international jury which assessed this year’s entries was chaired by European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Paolo Nespoli with Dr. Jacob O Ashong, Director (also Higher Education Consultant) at the Ghana Science Project and Planetarium; Christine Mugimba, Head of Spectrum Management at the Uganda Communications Commission; Professor Steve Simukanga, Vice Chancellor of the University of Zambia as well as a representative from MultiChoice Africa and Eutelsat.

The bright youngster who is currently studying Maths, Physics, Chemistry and further Maths is also involved in other co-curricular activities which include playing first team rugby, part of first team athletics, part of quiz senior team, public speaking, first aid club, and treasurer of the toastmasters amongst many others.
