There was pomp and fanfare as merrymakers ate, drank and danced accompanied by a galore of entertainment by wheel spinners and musicians, who entertained the revellers.
Delta Beverages marketing manager, Patricia Murambinda, yesterday told NewsDay that although they had not applied for consideration in the Guinness World Records following a record consumption of 12 453kgs of meat, they were happy that they achieved their objective.
“Castle Lager, as the flagship clear beer brand for Delta Beverages, wanted to give all braai lovers a platform to come together and set their own record of braaing meat, with the proceeds going to charity. We are happy with the huge success of the event, as thousands of Zimbabweans joined hands in this worthy cause, as 12 453kg of meat was consumed to surpass 10 000kg we had in mind,” she said.
“We hosted this event as a drive towards corporate social responsibility, as for every kilogramme of meat that was consumed, Castle Lager will donate an equivalent amount to be shared equally by Mpilo General Hospital in Bulawayo and Harare Central Hospital.”
Delta Beverages partnered popular braai spot outlets that include Pahuku, Mega 2, Family 24, Paramount and Farai, who assisted with the braaing of the meat. There were also some braai stands available for individual braaing.
Event organisers could have underestimated the turnout, as there were long queues outside the venue and chaotic scenes at the gate from midday until late in the evening, as the main entry point was not suitable to serve the huge numbers that turned out for the historic event.
There were few meat and beverage serving points, resulting in commotion and disorder, as the staff failed to timeously attend to people claiming their braai packs and beer that came with the $5 entry ticket.
Revellers were treated to music by Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, who shared the stage with Ammara Brown, dancehall icon, Killer T, while DJ L Roy, DJ Chucky, DJ Stavo and DJ Storm took turns to rock it on the turntables at the event that was held under the theme the Ultimate Braai.
