Facebook and Unity teaming up to create desktop game distribution platform

19 August 2016

Unity is one of the world’s leading game engine for creating 2D, 3D, VR and AR gaming, as well as multimedia content. Facebook has a user base of 650 million gamers who play Facebook connected games every month. Select developers using Unity 5.4 will be able to publish games directly on Facebook using Unity. A wider roll out is expected soon.

A streamlined exporting option is going to be built into Unity itself. Facebook paid $2.5 billion to (Rs 16,729 crore) to game developers in 2015. A limited group of developers are getting access to a closed-alpha version of the new platform. More developers will be added to the program on an ongoing basis, throughout the duration of the testing phase.

Elliot Solomon, Vice President, Business Development at Unity Technologies, said, “Developers channel their talent and passion into creating amazing games, but development is only part of the challenge. Integrating tools that provide effortless access to Facebook’s network is a key part of helping developers find the success they deserve.” Leo Olebe, Director of Global Games Partnerships at Facebook said, “Our mission is to give people the power to discover, play and share the games they love with the people they care about. Unity is the world’s leading game development platform. It’s great to be working with them to help developers find new audiences for the games they pour their hearts into.”

Developers interested in signing up for the program, can do so here.
