According to Chinese state media agency Xinhua, the satellite is dedicated to quantum science experiments and is intended to be the first to be able to achieve quantum communication between space and the Earth, which would be difficult to hack.

Xinhua also said that it has been nicknamed "Micius," the Latinised name of Mozi, a Chinese philosopher and scientist from the fifth century BC, who is often credited as the first scientist in human history to conduct optical experiments.
State media quoted the Chinese Academy of Sciences as stating that the satellite would also explore quantum teleportation for the first time.
