Leaked Huawei phone features massive 6.6-inch display

5 July 2016

GizmoChina is reporting that a second handset, model number EDI-DL00, recently showed up in a TENAA filing, a telecommunications equipment certification center in China. In lieu of an official name, the mystery device is tentatively being referred to as the Honor 8 Max. Here’s what we know at this hour.

As the name suggests, this is one massive phone with a 6.6-inch, 2K (2,560 x 1,440 resolution) display. It’s said to be powered by a Kirin 950 octa-core SoC clocked at 2.3GHz alongside 3GB of RAM and 32GB of local flash storage.

Around back is a standard 13-megapixel camera (sorry, no dual camera array) with an 8-megapixel shooter up front. One interesting choice is the placement of the fingerprint sensor – on the rear of the device near the top which will no doubt make it difficult to reach, especially if you try to one-hand the phone.

Leaked specifications claim the device measures 178.8 x 90.9 x 7.18 (mm) with a weight of 219 grams. The spacious chassis also accommodates a large 4,400mAh battery and we’re told it’ll run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

If GizmoChina is correct, the Honor 8 Max will likely compete with the Xiaomi Mi Max, a device that’s priced between $230 on the low end and $300 for a higher-end model. As such, Huawei will likely position the Honor 8 Max somewhere in that range.

Huawei will unveil the Honor 8 (and likely the Honor 8 Max) on July 11.
