BitTorrent has launched BitTorrent Now app, which will offer video and music on demand. The content will largely come from independent artistes, and the app will not allow users to access everything available on the torrent sites. BitTorrent Now has only been rolled out for Android but will come to iOS and Apple TV soon.
BitTorrent will largely work as a streaming app, allowing users to search for videos and music to play. BitTorrent Now will also support streaming VR content. It will allow users to post or upload their own VR videos also. But all the content on the app is not be free as users will have to pay for certain videos.
BitTorrent Now works like any other streaming app where users can follow artistes they like to get notifications, save videos to watch them later and customise their playlists.
BitTorrent is basically reintroducing BitTorrent Bundle, which was launched in 2013. According to the company, much has changed in BitTorrent Now as the app is more focused on bringing content from independent artists to its platform.
While dozens of options like Facebook, YouTube, SoundCloud etc are already available in the market for uploading content, BitTorrent still has a key advantage.
“There are still key advantages to BitTorrent. Other platforms are prescriptive. It must be music. It must be video. We want to keep that deliberately open so creators can experiment, to create and break what we think of art online as a whole,” Straith Schreder, BitTorrent’s VP of creative initiatives told The Verge.
The desktop client for BitTorrent too gives access to content from independent artistes.
