New data shows that even though the Internet of Things (IoT) is still very much in its initial stages, the average Zimbabwe household already boasts two or more connected devices, at least in major towns.
These connected Devices ranges from smartphones, tablets, PCs, TVs. Averaged out across the globe, this translates to four devices per household.
New Studies from London-based IHS Inc. has stated that at the end of 2015, there were 8.1 billion connected devices in use worldwide. The world population is currently at about 7.4 billion. This would mean they is a connected device in use for every man, woman and child in the world.
On a yearly bases, smartphones contribute approximately half a billion new devices to the market; tablet and OTT set-tops are also increasing quickly, but operate a full order of magnitude below the smartphone. By 2020, this ratio will only widen. Within predictions stating that` the smartphone-to-tablet ratio rises to nearly 10:1.
Notwithstanding the hype around the IoT, the only devices other than phones, tablets, and PCs that connect to the web and one another that are really having a positive impact within the average home, are focused on media and entertainment. For example, some 353 million set-top boxes and media streaming sticks from white label to Roku shipped during 2015.
